Psalm 119:1-176

By Vernon Gruver/Wendell Tenison

The Bible

This book contains the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom of sinners, and the happiness of believers. Its doctrine is holy, its precepts are binding, its histories are true, and its decisions are immutable. Read it to be wise, believe in it to be safe, and practice it to be holy. It contains light to direct you, food to support you, and comfort to cheer you. It is the pilgrim's staff, the pilot's compass, the soldier's sword, and the Christian's charter. Here paradise is restored, heaven opened, and the gates of hell disclosed. Christ is its grand object, our good its design, and the glory of God its end. It should fill the memory, rule the heart, and guide the feet. Read it slowly, frequently, and prayerfully. It is a mine of wealth, a paradise of glory, and a river of pleasure. It is given you in life, will be opened in the judgment, and be remembered forever. It involves the highest responsibility, will reward the greatest laborer, it will condemn all who trifle with its Holy contents.

    God wants man's Whole Heart; Matt.22:36-39; Ps.119:2, 10, 34, 69; Eccl.3:11.

The heart consist of man's intellect, emotions, will, power and conscience:

  • Will power; we choose and decide and execute a given action.

  • Conscience; do what we think is right and it approves or disapproves right from
        wrong, 1 Jn.3:18-21.

    God's word quickens (revives, makes alive) man's spiritual life, Ps.119:25, 40, 93, 156; Heb.4:12.

  • Cleanse

  • Guards against sin

  • Counsels

  • Gives hope

  • Quickens

  • Puts a song in the heart

  • Makes one wise

  • Feeds the soul

  • Gives light to my feet, Ps.119:105

  • Gives joy to my heart

  • Provides the only infallible way

    I will:

  • Meditate on thy precepts

  • Delight myself in the statutes

  • Speak of thy testimonies

  • Never forget thy law

  • Keep your commandments

I am small as the world, Ps.119:141:

  • Small in number: I am little in the eyes of man.

  • Small in years: but big in the eyes of God.

  • Small in rank: because I keep your commandments.

Listed below is an overview of the twenty two segments of Psalm 119:

    ALEPH

Keeping the commandments of the Lord with the whole heart where there will be no shame. Learning and keeping the statutes of the Lord will render praise to the Almighty with an upright heart.

    BETH

Hiding the word of the Lord in the heart will keep one from sinning. To delight and meditate upon the precepts and statutes of the Lord will cause rejoicing more than all of the riches in the world.

    GIMEL

A good life is keeping the word of the Lord. As a pilgrim in the earth, the commandments of the Lord are vital to the sustaining of the soul. Regardless of reproach and contempt from others, the meditation of his testimonies are delight and our counsellor.

    DALETH

The soul knows that the time of life is short, but his precepts and judgments will make one alive and remove heaviness from the heart. His truth in the commandments will deter a lying spirit and keep one from the shame of men.

    HE

Only the Lord can teach and give understanding of his statutes. Vanity and coveteousness will turn the heart from his testimonies. Being established in the delight of his commandments as a servant, will be quickened in the Lord's righteousness.

    VAU

The mercies and salvation of the Lord will enable one to speak boldly before kings and not be ashamed. Keeping the law of the Lord is walking in liberty and put to silence the ignorance of foolish men.

    ZAIN

Regardless of affliction, the word of the Lord causes hope. Despite the derision of the wicked proud, the word of the Lord is comfort. Remember the statutes as your song and you will be remembered by the Lord in his precepts.

    CHETH

Mercy is found according to his word if we hasten to keep it. Birds of a feather flock together and the right companions to keep are those who forsake not his law. Day and night we give thanks to him who is our portion.

    TETH

Wisdom, knowlege and good judgment is obtained by the believers by keeping his word. Affliction can cause one to forsake the statutes of the Lord, but good can come of it to make one to have more desire to learn his word. More than silver and gold, the word from the mouth of the Lord is the greatest treasure upon the earth.

    JOD

The hands of the Lord has made us and in his book are all of our body parts written. The tender mercies of the Lord are upon them who fear him and walk in his judgments. A sound heart in his statutes will never be ashamed.

    CAPH

When persecution comes the soul longs for the salvation of the Lord. The Lord will pronounce judgment upon those who persecute the righteous. In spite of the terror that the wicked has heaped upon us, the word of the Lord will never die within us.

    LAMED

The word of the Lord is settled in heaven as the rock of ages and cannot be moved or shaken. But, death and misery unto him who would sell the word of the Lord short. The Lord has established the earth and ordained that men keep his law, but many men have become the enemies of their creator.

    MEM

There is no greater teacher than the Lord, who through his word makes men wiser than the world. Studying at the feet of the Lord in his word causes one to have wisdom and understanding and to know the false teachings of men. The law of the Lord is sweet to the taste as honey to those who love him. But, bitter to those who despise his judgments.

    NUN

It is not within man to direct his steps, but the word of the Lord will brighten his way. Neither life, nor death, nor the snare of the wicked can keep us from the love of the law of the Lord. In the Lord is life and the life is the light of all men.

    SAMECH

The fear of the commandments is the beginning of wisdom and understanding. Seek the word of the Lord to keep us upright as he made all men, but they have sought out many inventions. Men unto this day are saying, evil is good and good evil.

    AIN

Ask and it will be given unto him who has a burning desire for the testimonies of the Lord. The world hates the law of the Lord and has sought every resource to make it null and void. Who has a thurst for an understanding of the law of the Lord? Will the things of this world deafen their ears and blind their eyes to the light of his precepts and statutes?

    PE

The ear of the Lord is not deaf unto those who hunger after an understanding of his word. O, but, the world would listen. The Lord, the faithful witness, the reflection of the Father of lights will shine upon our faces. It is a sad thing to see those who refuse to accept his truth.

    TZADDI

The law of the Lord is pure, upright and perfect converting the soul. The word of the Lord is truth from everlasting to everlasting. The word of the Lord is quick and powerful, sharper than any twoedged sword, even to the dividing of the soul and spirit and of the joints and marrow.

    KOPH

The Lord is not far from those who trust and do his commandments. The Lord is the same today, yesterday and forever, who in the beginning made all things and without him was not anything made that was made. The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous.

    RESH

The Lord knows how to deliver the faithful from temptation and put a stumbling block before the oppressor. Cast away your transgressions and the Lord will make you a new heart and a new spirit. The Lord takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but wills that all should return unto him.

    SCHIN

There will always be those who will persecute the righteous and say, they are doing the Lord service. Neither life, death, things in the earth, nor things under the earth shall never separate us from the love of the Lord. The whole duty of man is to fear the Lord and keep his commandments.

    TAU

No matter what befalls us, never forget the law and commandments of the Lord. His word will not return unto him void, but shall accomplish that for which pleases him and prosper in the thing whereto he sent it. The living know that they shall die and the dead know nothing, therefore, pray without ceasing that your heart may be full of the gracious mercies of the Lord.

Eccl 10:20 "Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter."
