The Word of God is Quick (living) and Powerful

By Wendell Tenison

The Word of God is His Breath:

Isa 55:11  "So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it."

The word of God has always accomplished what he wanted. It has always contained instruction, promises, rewards and penalties. The living word always finds it way back to God either to excuse or to punish those to whom it was sent.

2 Tim 3:16  "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:"

If we are inspired we are alive and our breath is still within us; if expired we are dead. We say, that a person expired on a certain time and date, meaning they died. It would be proper and right to say that the word of God is breathed or inspired. All scripture is for doctrine, reproof, correction and instruction in righteousness that there is nothing lacking. What else do we need?

John 20:22  "And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:"

Here again, is the breath or the inspiration of Christ upon his disciples. This was simply a transfer of power which was generated from his lips.

Mat 24:35  "Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away."

As Christ is eternally alive, so are his words.

John 12:48  "He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day."

It goes without saying, to reject the words of Christ is to reject him. Satan is the master of deception and he has deceived many into believing that they do not have to accept the words of Christ. Judgment will surely come upon those who sneer at his words.

2 Th 2:8  "And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:"

Sometimes the word spirit means breath or wind. All that Christ has to do is speak the word and it will be done. When the Roman centurion came to ask Jesus to heal his servant at his home sick, he said, I am not worthy that you should come under my roof; just speak the word only and my servant shall be healed.

Mat 8:5-10  "And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him,.....And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented......And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him......The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed......For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it......When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel."

Gen 2:7  "And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."

Job 27:3  "All the while my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils;"

Job 33:4  "The spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life."

Again, this is a transfer of power from the mouth of God to the nostrils of man. The spirit of God, the breath of life and the breath of the Almighty are all the same thing, the oxygen of life.

Heb 11:3  "Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear."

Psa 33:6  "By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth."

By this time we are beginning to get the picture. Nothing has ever been done except by the word of his power.

2 Pet 3:5  "For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:"

The word "standing" in the Greek text is "subsisting." In other words, had it not been for the word of God holding the earth together while the flood waters rose to fifteen cubits above the highest mountain, it would have crumbled.

1 Ki 17:17-22  "And it came to pass after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so sore, that there was no breath left in him......And she said unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art thou come unto me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son?.....And he said unto her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into a loft, where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed......And he cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by slaying her son?.....And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child's soul come into him again......And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived."

2 Ki 4:32-35  "And when Elisha was come into the house, behold, the child was dead, and laid upon his bed......He went in therefore, and shut the door upon them twain, and prayed unto the LORD......And he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands: and he stretched himself upon the child; and the flesh of the child waxed warm......Then he returned, and walked in the house to and fro; and went up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes."

There is no question but what God raised these children back to life. The method used is what we call mouth to mouth artificial respiration. These children were not just lying in a comma, they were dead and the normal way in which we would administer artificial respiration would not have brought them back to life. The point is, it was the breath of God that brought them back to life.

Exo 15:8  "And with the blast of thy nostrils the waters were gathered together, the floods stood upright as an heap, and the depths were congealed in the heart of the sea."

2 Sam 22:16  "And the channels of the sea appeared, the foundations of the world were discovered, at the rebuking of the LORD, at the blast of the breath of his nostrils."

Job 4:9  "By the blast of God they perish, and by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed."

Psa 18:15  "Then the channels of waters were seen, and the foundations of the world were discovered at thy rebuke, O LORD, at the blast of the breath of thy nostrils."

Who can understand the power of the Almighty? Generally speaking, the world views God as being weak, because he is loving, forgiving and kind. Therefore, men reason that those like God are also weak. Not true! We should shudder at the awesome power of our maker. There may be some who take exception to the fact that God supplies the air that we breath by his nostrils. I know that trees and plants give off oxygen, but there are many areas that do not have any trees.

Job 37:10  "By the breath of God frost is given: and the breadth of the waters is straitened."

Was the book of Job just written as the first book of poetry ever recorded that contained a bunch of fables? Absolutely not! If these things were true then, so are they now.

Job 41:21  "His breath kindleth coals, and a flame goeth out of his mouth."

How do we suppose God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah? By the breath of his mouth.

Job 12:10  "In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind."

Dan 5:23  "But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified:"

Acts 17:25  "Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;"

If we have not figured it out by now we never will. Our breath lies within the hand of God, therefore, never let us be presumptuous of the grace of God who is the giver of all life.

Isa 11:1-4  "And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:.....And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;.....And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears:.....But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked."

Jesus the Christ has been given all power and authority to judge the world with righteous indignation and will render justice to the wicked by the breath of his lips. Amen.
